This Mi'Kmaq Quill Box, is made using porcupine quills, which are dyed and arranged in a pattern across the lid and exterior of the box. The Mi'kmaq have been making birch and quill baskets for centuries. Fragments found at a New Brunswick archeological site date back as far as 2500 years, and the style of baskets made today dates back to at least the 1700s, when they were first produced for the European market. Several dozen Mi'kmaq still make baskets in the Atlantic Provinces today, including many younger people in recognition of the importance of cultural traditions.
