The Passing of a Past President of the Albert County Historical Society - Howard Dixon

It is with greatest sympathy to his family that we report the death of Howard Dixon. A Past President of the Society and was a director for numerous years. Howard was an avid genealogist and completed many family genealogies for Albert County families. He helped with the Quilt Show and his wife was very involved on the Quilt Committee until recent years. Their daughter Gwen Dixon Potts is still involved with the Museum quilt show and offers a workshop each year. His obituary follows:

It is with great sadness that the family of Howard Dixon announce his passing on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at the Dr. Georges L. Dumont University Hospital. Born in Riverside Albert NB, he was the son of the late Everett and Mabel Helen (Tingley) Dixon, and brother of the late James Dixon. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 67 years, Betty; daughters Rebecca (Dan) Hink, Gwendolyn (Jim Potts) Dixon and son Jeffrey (Nancy) Dixon; grandchildren Stephanie (William) Linnard, Ian Hink and nieces Lisa, Charlene, Heather, Heidi, and Krista; nephews Peter, Andrew and Darren, and family members Maynard William and Sandra Atkinson and Arnold Hopper. He was also predeceased, by his sisters-in-law Phyllis Dixon and Pauline Hopper, and by his niece Cynthia Atkinson (Hewitt).

Howard graduated third in his class from the University of New Brunswick with an Electrical Engineering degree in 1955. He worked for the NBTel Company, CNR and RG Cowan & Associates, before beginning his own engineering firm, HN Dixon Ltd. in the mid 1970’s. During his career, Howard was a member of the Electrical Institute of Canada, the Atlantic Professional Engineers, won an international lighting design award for his work on the new Riverview High School, built in 1979, and served as president of the Illuminating Engineering Society. Howard also had a strong interest in mechanical engineering and loved to invent mechanical items, such as a combination tractor-snowblower, and a specialized auto transmission. Howard served as a councillor on the last Gunningsville Council, before the amalgamation of the Town of Riverview.

Howard was a passionate member of the Albert County Historical Society and an avid genealogist. He researched his own family, the Jonah family, and contributed to the completion of many other genealogies of local and distant families who had Albert County connections. In his younger years, Howard had an interest in outdoor activities, such as fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling. He closely followed the Toronto Blue Jays and the Curse of Oak Island.

The family wishes to express their gratitude for the excellent care provided to Howard and his family by the nurses of 4E and the palliative care team.

A private service will take place at the Dawson Settlement (Jonah) Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Cobb’s Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 330 Whitepine Rd., Riverview (869-2007). Donations may be made to Harvest House, the Albert County Historical Society or the Tree of Hope at the Dr. Georges L. Dumont Hospital.
