Buried Treasure and a Mother’s Grief - the First World War Silver Cross belonging to Pte.Clifford Robinson Oulton

While metal detecting on a construction site earlier this year, Stephen Kellar of Moncton, NB, found what may have been the find of his life. Buried 6 inches beneath the ground, he found the Silver Memorial Cross belonging to the youngest New Brunswick soldier killed on active duty in the First World War. Pte Clifford Robinson Oulton enlisted in 1916 when he was only 14 years old and was killed at the Battle of Passchendaele on November 1, 1917, aged 15 years 334 days.

Introducing the inaugural “Living by the Sea” Children’s Festival at the Albert County Museum! This event is being held during two days – August 12 & 13, 2022 from 10am to 3pm daily. The Children’s Festival will include entertainment, music, games, museum exhibits and book reading presentations by well known children’s authors, Jennifer McGrath and Dianne Carmel-Leger. Participation in the Children’s Festival is included with regular paid admission to the Museum by parents, grandparents or guardians.

The New Brunswick Museum is very pleased to collaborate with the Albert County Historical Society (Albert County Museum & R.B. Bennett Centre) on a special feature display of the Privy Councillor Uniform Jacket that belonged to Prime Minister Richard Bedford Bennett (later Viscount Bennett). In commemoration of the 152nd birthday of Prime Minister Richard Bedford Bennett, his Privy Councillor’s uniform jacket will be on display 3rd July 2022, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Albert County Museum during the annual R.B. Bennett Day.

In celebration of the 70th Anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II ascending to the throne, the Albert County Historical Society will host a Platinum Jubilee Ceremony at the Court House on Saturday, June 4, 2022. This event will provide an opportunity to pay tribute to “our Queen of Canada”, who, for many of us, is the only Monarch we have ever known. The event begins at 1pm with a reception to follow in the Community Hall.

The Albert County Historical Society is pleased to announce the 60th Anniversary of the Albert County Museum taking place in 2022. The Museum, located in Hopewell Cape, NB, was opened to the public in 1962 on the site of the historic 1845 “Shiretown” of Albert County, the once-bustling municipality capital.

Postcard collecting or deltiology was at its peak between 1907 to 1910. Many early cards were printed in Great Britain or Germany, but even Moncton had a major producer doing some of the more elaborate designs. This Christmas postcard is part of a collection of postcards sent by Miss Ella Beatty in 1915.

While we now enjoy them as a decoration in our homes, candles were a necessity in the days before electricity was a common feature of the home. Prior to the development of kerosene, most lighting was provided by candles. When the supply of candles dwindled, tin moulds like this one would be used to make a new batch.

This Regina disc music box was developed in the late 19th century, following the cylinder music box. A similar Regina music box to the one seen here appears in the 1898 Sears, Roebuck & Co. Catalog, selling for $78.95 and extra "tune sheets" selling for 76 cents each. Considering inflation, this would be equivalent to almost $2000 today!
