Artefact of the Week 2021 - 31. Walling Map
The Walling Map of 1862 is a topographical map of the counties of Albert and Westmorland. It was designed by American cartographer Henry Francis Walling and offers an abundance of detailed information for genealogists, as it is one of the first official maps that shows Albert County separate from Westmorland County. The map is designed from the actual surveys under the direction of Walling himself. If you had ancestors living in this area in 1862, the names and locations of residences would be visible on the map, as well as the churches, schools, tanneries and other places of business found in the area during that time.
Another Walling Map of the region can be found in the museum’s Tax Office building.
