Love Your Covered Bridge Day at Sawmill Creek Covered Bridge Sunday August 1st from 2-4pm

The Albert County Historical Society invites one and all to the “Love Your Covered Bridge Day” event on Sunday, August 1st from 2pm - 4pm at the Sawmill Creek Covered Bridge in Hopewell Hill, Albert County.

This will be a community event for “celebration and appreciation” of the Sawmill Creek Bridge, after the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure completed the major work project of replacing the roof of the covered bridge, to ensure the bridge will remain for many years to come. The Sawmill Creek Bridge, still standing after 113 years, is a testament to the construction skills of the covered bridge builder, A. E. Syme, and the men who worked on the bridge during its construction in 1907 and 1908.

Preserving the covered bridges within New Brunswick is preserving an important part of our proud heritage! We gratefully acknowledge and extend a huge thank you to New Brunswick’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure for the new roof to preserve our Sawmill Creek Bridge. As well, the provision of the new Sawmill Creek Bridge sign through the office of Albert MLA, Hon. Mike Holland, is recognized with hearty thanks. Gratitude is extended to the community members who joined with the Albert County Historical Society and the Albert County Tourism Association in support of the bridge project. A grateful thank you to the Association Heritage New Brunswick and the Covered Bridges Conservation Association of New Brunswick, for sending messages of support and appreciation to the NB Dept of Transportation and Infrastructure regarding the bridge repairs.

“It is so important to work together to preserve and to share the proud heritage of our individual communities within the province,” expressed Dawne McLean, President of the Albert County Historical Society. “It is events such as this that provide a perfect opportunity to join together and celebrate our rich heritage!”

Don’t miss this heritage celebration! Bring your lawn chairs and join us for a festive afternoon on Sunday, August 1, 2pm-4pm, at the Sawmill Creek Covered Bridge in Hopewell Hill (just a stone’s throw off Route 114). Tap your toes to lively music played by Sara and James Nelson. Listen to the interesting history of the construction of the bridge. Enjoy canteen refreshments provided by Riverside-Albert Volunteer Fire Dept and the S&C ice-cream shop! It will be a special community day “at the bridge” and hopefully, it will become an annual celebration!

The current NB Covid-19 guidelines for outdoor events will be followed. There must be 2 metre distancing between groups. Masks must be worn. Hand sanitizer stations will be on site.
